Area

These statistics apply the regional division of 1 January 2024 to the whole time series. Data for merged municipalities have been combined. Partial municipal mergers have not been taken into account in the years preceding the merger.

Family status

- Spouse without children: Also includes those in registered partnerships without children and starting from 2017, same-sex married couples without children.
- Spouse with children: Also includes those in registered partnerships with children and starting from 2017, same-sex married couples with children.
- Cohabiting partner without children: Cohabiting couples are formed from persons of opposite sexes aged 18 or over without partners living permanently in the same apartment if their age difference is under 16 years and they are not siblings. If the couple has a common child, the age limits do not apply. Persons of the same sex living together are not regarded as cohabiting couples. The exception to this rule is two same-sex persons who have a common child in the dwelling. As a rule, these are female couples in which one woman is the biological mother of the common child and the other is the second mother established for the child (Parenthood Act 775/2022, Section 5).

- Child: In the family statistics children comprise the following persons, regardless of age, who live with their parents: biological children, adopted children and also biological children, adopted children and confirmed children of one of the spouses. Foster children and children in the care of the family are not classified as children.

Age refers to a person's age in whole years as at 31 December.
